How should I take the Wegovy® Pill?
- Take your Wegovy® pill on an empty stomach in the morning with approximately 120ml of water. Do not take it with any other liquids besides water.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before eating food, drinking beverages, or taking other oral medications.
- Swallow the pill whole. Do not crush, cut, chew, or dissolve it.
- If you miss a dose, skip that day’s dose and get back on track by taking the scheduled dose the next day.
How do I increase the dose?
The diagram above shows a common step-wise approach to dosing. If you experience any unpleasant side effects your doctor may ask you to continue at a lower dose for a longer period of time. You can book an optional video call with a GP at any time.
How does it work?
GLP-1 agonists suppress appetite, increase fullness and slow stomach emptying. This in turn reduces the amount of calories consumed which ultimately helps with weight loss.
Should I take the Wegovy® Pill if I am unwell?
If you have mild cold and flu symptoms it is generally fine to continue with your medication. If you experience diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting, withhold the medication temporarily and discuss with your GP. Alternatively, feel free to book a video or telephone consultation with one of our GPs online at any time.
Is the Wegovy® Pill safe to take with hormone replacement therapy?
If you are taking both oestrogen and progesterone as part of your HRT, we recommend considering a switch to a transdermal route. This is because the Wegovy® pill delays gastric emptying, which may reduce the efficacy of the progesterone component of HRT and thus reduce endometrial protection.
Is it safe to have oral contraception with Wegovy®?
If you vomit within 3-4 hours of taking your contraceptive pill, treat it as a missed dose and follow your medication’s instructions. You can take Wegovy® with oral contraception. However, if you wish to minimise the risk of pregnancy entirely, it may be safer to switch to a non-oral birth control method. Common alternatives include the Mirena coil, contraceptive patches or the depo injection.

What should I do if I am planning a pregnancy?
Stop the medication 2 months before. If you become pregnant whilst on the medication, stop the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
How long will it take to work?
You may start to notice the effects after a few weeks of regular use. Studies have shown an average of 16.6% weight loss at 64 weeks with the maximum dose.
Are there any side effects to the Wegovy® Pill?
Some people tolerate medications better than others. Mild side effects might be more noticeable when commencing treatment or after a dose increase. These often settle with time. Common side effects
Nausea, vomiting, burping, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, tiredness, mild abdominal pain, headaches, changes in taste, and potentially gallstones.
Rare and uncommon side effects
Optic neuropathy (which may present as sudden changes in vision, blind spots or eye pain on movement) and pancreatitis.
Allergic reactions
In some cases, allergies are also possible. If you are experiencing any breathing difficulty, lip swelling, tongue swelling or feel unwell, please contact 999, NHS 111 or an emergency service.
If you experience any unpleasant side effect including severe abdominal pain and vomiting, sudden changes in vision, blind spots or eye pain, please contact your doctor immediately.
